Test Prep That Works: HFCR Scholars Rise Above the Curve

Standardized testing is often a major hurdle on the road to college—but not for students at Holy Family Cristo Rey. In 2022, the school launched an in-house SAT/ACT test prep program, and the results have been nothing short of transformational. Designed and led by faculty members Elizabeth Bieri (now teaching at Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston) and S’Heelia Marks, the program aims to boost scores, build student confidence, and open doors to college acceptances and scholarships. What began with modest gains has now grown into one of the school’s most successful academic initiatives.
The numbers speak for themselves: test scores have improved year after year, with students gaining an average of 30 points annually. Today, 65% of upperclassmen benchmark in at least one subject on their in-school SAT—far exceeding the Cristo Rey Network’s 50% target. And the program doesn’t just track students for one year; it follows them from freshman year’s PSAT 9 all the way through multiple official SAT and ACT exams in junior and senior year.
A key reason for the program’s success? It’s embedded directly into the school day. Freshmen begin with enrichment electives that reinforce core math and English skills. Sophomores tackle a targeted “Algebra for the SAT” elective. Juniors take a year-long course split between English and math instruction, taught by certified HFCR faculty. Seniors benefit from additional SAT tutoring and multiple opportunities to take both the SAT and ACT, including test-day waivers and Saturday test date support provided by the college counseling department.
Beyond the classroom, HFCR partners with CollegeSpring, a nonprofit that provides teacher training, digital curriculum, and data tools to enhance the test prep experience. Regular data reviews ensure that instruction remains personalized and effective—and that parents, board members, and school leaders are always informed. The emphasis on strong relationships, skilled teaching, and strategic support has helped foster a school-wide culture of high expectations and achievement.
But perhaps most important is the program’s commitment to motivation. Scholars are recognized throughout the year for their hard work and growth. Benchmarking students earn college gear of their choice, and top scorers are featured on a school bulletin board. Special prizes, class celebrations, and even college visits—including overnight trips—add to the excitement and reinforce the school’s message: you can do this, and we believe in you.
At Holy Family Cristo Rey, test prep isn’t about pressure—it’s about possibility. And as more scholars hit their benchmarks and unlock the doors to college and career success, the message is clear: HFCR is helping students rise, one test score at a time.
