The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
Our God has appeared on the earth, and lived among us. Baruch 3:38
As we seek to protect ourselves from the pandemic, we have allowed our common lives to be characterized by descriptions of isolation and separation. All the talk of ‘bubbles’ and ‘social distancing’ of the past year has obscured the even more critical lesson of the importance of family.
The effects of the pandemic on our health and economy has focused new attention on our common responsibility for each other, especially in our families, and renewed our obligations to care for and protect all those in our households. Many of us have taken on new obligations to educate the young and find ways to engage the elderly; and in these acts of care and concern we gain new perspective on the human family and our relationships in society.
In this Christmas Season, as we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, let us look to the future with a renewed sense of our familial joys and obligations. Let us imitate the Holy Family in the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity so that, in the joy of God’s house, we may delight one day in eternal rewards.
With prayers for a safe, healthy, and joyous Christmas Season,
Fr. Jon Chalmers & the community of Holy Family Cristo Rey
