Our Past is the Foundation for Our Future – Our Alumni are Our Link with the Past
As a graduate of Holy Family Catholic High School more than thirty years ago I am still very interested in what happens there. A day never passes without a pleasant memory from those times, like Father Nathaniel's thunderous cries of "Tor-Na-Doe!!!!!" which would shake the rafters; the after-school dances at the "silver barn" in my bare feet; the basketball seasons that seemed endless. There was always something going on at Holy Family.
Today, Holy Family Cristo Rey continues what the school has always done: providing our youth with a first-class education; nurturing an appreciation and love of the family unit; instilling respect for others; focusing on living Christ-centered lives; and of course, demanding hard work!
Holy Family Cristo Rey is touted as "The School that Works." For me, Holy Family has always “worked” on at least two levels. First, many of us cleaned classrooms or worked in the cafeteria to earn part of our tuition; some of us held jobs after school. Second, the tremendous education we received from the Passionists transformed us into a group of socially conscious, politically active, culturally sensitive individuals who are successful in many different walks of life.
Among many callings, Holy Family alumni are attorneys, business executives, educators and health care professionals. Our alumni have been elected to the state House of Representatives; we serve on the boards of cultural institutions such as the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. We even have a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
The time has come for us who have reaped the benefits of our Holy Family education to embrace Holy Family Cristo Rey. Although we can never fully repay those who gave us our education, it is fully within our power to ensure that our alma mater continues and thrives in its mission of transforming high school students into successful adults. We can help the next generation of Holy Family students fulfill their thirst for knowledge.
Holy Family Cristo Rey needs our spiritual, intellectual and financial support. The simple act of giving is a win-win proposition for everyone involved, but especially for the children.
What can we do? Let’s practice networking, mentoring, brain-storming and provide some good old-fashioned elbow grease to help our alma mater. We can begin by praying for our school, its administrators, faculty and staff. Let’s ask God daily for the success of Holy Family Cristo Rey.
We are gifted with a wide range of intellectual skills and talents that can help the school and its students succeed. We can provide volunteer assistance as tutors, serve as office workers, and organize school cleanups; we can secure jobs for the Corporate Internship Program, sponsor athletic teams or help with special events.
The most important thing we can do is to support our school financially. The cost of providing a college prep education today is much higher than it was when we attended Holy Family. No gift is too large or too small. Every donation makes a difference.
We can ensure the success of Holy Family Cristo Rey and make a difference in the lives of those who follow us. Join the alumni association, make a donation and enlist your company's matching gift program to increase the size of your gift. These acts of selflessness will go a long way in paying back the gift that was given to us.
